Painted Lady – A Poem

Legs crossed &
Painted arms
wrapped tightly
over my heart
Head tucked in
Afraid to fail // I
slowly begin to wake
Glittering lashes flutter
& catching in time
to the rhythm
of my rocking
In the hues of moonlight
I look left & then
quickly to my right
Pushing harder
Rocking faster to
A different beat
I ever so slowly
Let one arm
drop down &
then the other
I press my palms
onto the desert
stone & push off
Bare knees
unsteady
Moving but
trembling
I crawl toward
a rising sun
Holding tightly to
a Joshua tree
Reaching up as
My iridescent wings
struggling to open
Catch in the sunlight
Continuing to climb
Long toes str-et-ching
Lifting me higher
from limb to limb
above the Mojave
Determined to fly

and fly you will…this felt like an awakening…and that desire is the first thing…and realizing as well you have the wings for it…smiles.

  2. claudia says:

yeah….def. sounds like awakening..a time of change…of moving forward…of taking flight…now go spread your wings…smiles

  3. Gretchen, Brian and Claudia said it before I got here… it is about awakening. Again, the “desert” holds special meaning, I know, but the glitter, the sparkle, it’s all LIFE! A.

  4. This is so beautifully done! Smiles!

  5. As always your words make me also want to fly! Beautiful…

  6. I love that desire and push to fly ~ Despite obstacles and challenges, you will ~

    Have a wonderful day ~

  7. Mary says:

Each of us CAN fly, I think, if we do it in our own way. This is well expressed, Gretchen.

  8. Tony Maude says:

What a lovely Popint of View poem – and extended metaphor. Nicely written, Gretchen.

  10. cloudfactor5 says:

You fly with your words, this may be as close as we can ever truly get without a wingsuit

This is beautiful Gretchen and I can see you rise to take flight in every movement.

  12. Each day is a new birth, a butterfly released, a baby bird taking flight, a flowers seed released to the wind. I enjoy reading about your victories over challenges. Insirational as always ans exceptionally well written!
